A Mobile Environmental Sanitation Court in Umuahia, Abia State capital, last Saturday, fined 73 offenders of the state monthly environmental sanitation exercise and discharged 11 others.
The offenders were arrested at different locations across the capital during the July exercise which lasted from 7 am to 10 am.
The presiding magistrate, O.C. Ibekwe, who condemned the attitude of the offenders, discharged the 11 persons on legal, health, and compassionate grounds.
Addressing journalists after the exercise, the state Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna, expressed delight with the conduct of the exercise.
”This is a clear evidence that residents of the state are gradually aligning themselves with Governor Alex Otti’s ‘Clean and Green’ vision for the state,” he said.
Speaking also, Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment, Ijeoma Iheukwumere advocated greater engagement in subsequent exercises.
