In a significant move towards addressing the longstanding infrastructure challenges, the Minister of Niger Delta Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, is exploring cutting-edge nanotechnology solutions for road construction in the region.

During a recent meeting at the ministry, Engr. Momoh received a comprehensive presentation from VXL Nigeria Ltd, a company at the forefront of nanotechnology applications in road construction.

In a statement by his media aide, Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah, the minister showed keen interest in the potential of this innovative technology to revolutionise road infrastructure in the notoriously challenging terrain of the Niger Delta.

“Given the peculiar challenges we face in the Niger Delta, especially with roads that suffer due to poor soil and constant flooding, it is imperative to consider new technologies like this,” Minister Momoh stated.

He emphasised the critical need for sustainable infrastructure that can withstand the region’s unique environmental conditions.

The nanotechnology solutions presented by VXL Nigeria Ltd include products such as XL-Terrasoil, XL-Bond, and XL-Bitupave which are designed to enhance soil stabilisation, waterproofing, and bitumen modification which are all crucial factors in constructing durable roads in the flood-prone region.

Momoh also proposed a trial project to evaluate the effectiveness of nanotechnology in real-time road construction. “I believe a pilot project would be appropriate to see firsthand how these solutions can address our issues.”

The minister’s exploration of this technology comes as a response to the persistent problems of road deterioration in the Niger Delta where traditional construction methods have often fallen short due to the challenging environmental conditions.

The firm, which has successfully partnered with Lagos State since 2009, showcased the proven efficacy of their nanotechnology products in various road projects.

The company has also expressed readiness to collaborate with the Ministry of Niger Delta Development on a pilot project.
