Kano State governor, Alhaji Abba Yusuf, has donated N100 million to victims of the recent fire outbreak that razed several shops at Singer Market in Kano to cushion the losses suffered by affected traders.
The governor, who visited the market to sympathise with the traders, expressed concern over the scale of destruction caused by the incident and assured them of the state government’s support towards recovery.
In a statement by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, Yusuf said the financial intervention was to provide immediate relief to victims to enable them resume business activities.
The governor was received by the chairman of Singer Market, Barrister Junaidu Muhammad Zakari; a market elder, Alhaji Sabi’u Bako; and the owner of the affected plaza, Alhaji Munzali Mazaf.
During the visit, Yusuf also directed the immediate expansion and rehabilitation of key roads within the market to ease movement and improve commercial activities.
According to the statement, the Kano State government has approved the award of a N3 billion road expansion and rehabilitation project covering Bello Road, Ado Bayero Road, Kandoki, Yolawa and Kwangiri roads.
The governor said the project would help reduce flooding risks and ease traffic congestion within the markets’ environment in Kano metropolis.
He further pledged to solarise Singer Market as part of measures to modernise markets across the state in line with his administration’s urban renewal agenda and economic development drive.
Yusuf also directed contractors handling the road projects to mobilise to site and commence work within 10 days.
Leaders and elders of the market commended the governor for the visit and described the intervention as timely, noting that it would go a long way in supporting traders affected by the inferno.
They also applauded the state government’s continued commitment to improving infrastructure and supporting commercial activities in Kano.
