How Edo Emerged Champion Of Women’s Rugby Tournament

The 2023 first women’s rugby tournament has ended at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State with Edo’s team emerging champion.

The Edo team went unbeaten and without conceding a point in six games to emerge champions of the tournament.

The Coach Williams Ntiense-led side went into the final gallantly as the favourites with a thumping victory over Lagos-based side, ECO II.

Despite the downpour,  the Edo girls were fantastic from all fronts as they proved their worth with goals to overcome the Lagos side.

Becky Okpitiko who was voted player of the tournament was instrumental in the final as her team handed the Lagos based side 17-0 beating to lift the maiden trophy amidst pump and wild jubilation.

Before then, team Edo had devoured Imo Pyramids, Abia Rugby Team and Delta B in the qualifying stage and later hammered Benue Buffalos before their 9ver bearing on Delta Team A in the Semi Final to book a place in the final undefeated.

Earlier, Delta A defeated Team Delta B 15-5 to clinch the bronze medal.

Becky Okpitiko was meanwhile presented with a cash reward of #100,000 for emerging the Most Valuable Player and Highest Try Score in the tournament.

Speaking after the game, Coach Williams Ntiense thanked God for the success and also the sports commission for their support.

The coach however hinted that more support and sponsorship from the private sector can elevate the team and compete on the international level.
