The 18-hole golf course of the prestigious IBB International Golf and Country Club Abuja will come alive once again from today as no fewer than 400 golfers from across the country will be competing for honour in the Captain Banjo Obaleye’s Inaugural Tournament.
Addressing newsmen yesterday of the event, the chairman of the organising committee, Maj Gen Chris Jemitola (Rtd), said the tournament will mark the beginning of a new era that will bring in lots of innovations into the club.
He said the IBB Golf Club being in the capital city of Nigeria deserves to be best.
“Abuja is the capital city of Nigeria, so this club should carry that image by being the best. This club should be able to compete with the best golf clubs anywhere in the world. So, this is the beginning of a new era that will bring in lots of innovations into this club,” General Jemitola said.
According to him, over 400 golfers from across the country, including professionals, will swing laurels in the 2023 Captain Inaugural tournament.
“Over 400 golfers from across the country will today hit Abuja to participate in the 2023 Captain Inaugural tournament.
“We know we have a lot of challenges as regards capacity, it is a long haul as it is not something that can be done in a sweep. Many things are put in place now to ensure that young people break into PGA and other international golf championships. Golf is believed to be a game for the elite but it’s not true as we have many caddies who are now pros and we have a program in place where we have some of the caddies, expose them to training.”
According to General Jemitola, the professionals will start today while the veterans both male and female in handicap 19-54 category will start on Thursday.
On Friday, handicap 11-18 category will take their turn while handicap 0-10 category will battling it out for precious prize on Saturday.
