As the Estadio de la Cartuja braces for a high-stakes Copa del Rey final on Saturday, all eyes will be on Ademola Lookman. The Nigerian international has a golden opportunity to claim his first trophy since joining Atlético Madrid, when Diego Simeone’s side lock horns with Real Sociedad for Spanish football’s oldest knockout crown.

Lookman, who arrived from Serie A outfit Atalanta in the January transfer window, has wasted no time in becoming a cornerstone of the Rojiblancos’ attack. In just 17 appearances across all competitions, the 27-year-old winger has racked up six goals and four assists a return that underscores his seamless adaptation to Simeone’s demanding system.

But it is in the Copa del Rey where Lookman has truly sparkled. With three outings in the competition, he has contributed two goals and two assists, each coming at pivotal moments.

His strikes against Real Betis and Barcelona propelled Atlético past two formidable opponents and into the final, cementing his reputation as a big-game performer.

For Lookman, lifting the trophy would mark only the second club-level honor of his career. His sole previous silverware came in the 2023/24 season, when he helped Atalanta stun Bayer Leverkusen to win the UEFA Europa League — a triumph that included a memorable hat-trick in the final. Now, he aims to add domestic glory to his résumé.

Atlético Madrid enter the final chasing their 11th Copa del Rey title, a victory that would further embellish Simeone’s trophy-laden tenure. Their opponents, Real Sociedad, are seeking a fifth crown, having last won the competition in 2019–20.

The Basque side, known for their disciplined possession game, will pose a stern test for Lookman and his teammates.

Kick-off is scheduled for 21:00 local time at the Estadio de la Cartuja in Seville. With Lookman in red-hot form and hungry for his first Atlético trophy, the stage is set for a compelling final chapter to Spain’s cup competition.
