As the 2023 presidential elections draw closer, a former deputy governor of Imo State, Prince Eze Madumere has urged Nigerians to shun ethnicity and religion and vote for competence and capacity to deliver dividends of democracy to the citizenry.

Prince Madumere made this known in an interaction with LEADERSHIP Weekend.

He encouraged Nigerians to look beyond sentiments and vote for a competent leader that would drive economic growth and prosperity in the country.

According to him, the nation should outgrow primordial sentiments and be able to go for the best. He indicated that the bane of societal growth is lack of courage to do the right thing at the right time.

“Nigerians must not vote based on religion and ethnicity. It should be purely about competence and capacity because if you don’t have a competent leader, you’re going to have the same repetition of issues and challenges across the country.

“I believe Nigerians should look beyond the semantics, religion and go for who we believe can give us impactful leadership. The person doesn’t have to be my relation or come from my village; let us look at the person’s antecedents and competence as the driving factor in choosing the best president,” he said.

Speaking in respect of the North Central, Prince Madumere admonished leaders to take into consideration the interest of various ethnic groups in the interest of justice, equity and fair play.

The former deputy governor highlighted that “in a relationship, we must be treated equally for peace to reign. The interest of the North Central and the Southeast should be taken into consideration in the national power-equation.”
