The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has recognised Adebola Opaleye, a media practitioner, for his work in media and youth development.

Known as “Dakingman,” Opaleye received a “Trailblazer” commendation from NANS, acknowledging his contributions to student advocacy and social progress.

NANS, representing over 40 million Nigerian students, praised Opaleye’s digital platform, DKMGR, which focuses on civic awareness, education, and youth issues.

Comrade Ambassador Okereafor Bestman, NANS National PRO, said the recognition followed a review of Opaleye’s media engagement and student-focused initiatives.

Opaleye’s online content tackles education access, youth unemployment, and civic participation, resonating with Nigeria’s independent media voices.

The commendation, though informal, highlights the growing role of non-governmental bodies in recognising civic contributions amid rising distrust in traditional media.

Critics note such awards may lack rigorous vetting, urging transparency to avoid perceptions of symbolic or politicised gestures.

Opaleye’s recognition reflects a shift in Nigeria’s public discourse, with digital platforms amplifying voices outside mainstream channels.

NANS remains a key platform for Nigeria’s large student population, influencing public policy and social recognition despite internal critiques.

The acknowledgment underscores how digital media figures like Opaleye are shaping youth engagement in Nigeria’s evolving civic landscape.
