Producers Prioritise Physical Beauty Over Talent — Shine Rosman

Nollywood actress Shine Rosman has raised concerns about casting metrics in the Nigerian film industry, alleging that a vast majority of filmmakers and producers now prioritise physical beauty over raw acting talent.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Baaj and Paul podcast, the actress stated that the extreme emphasis on physical appearance is eroding creative depth in Nollywood and pushing many actresses to undergo cosmetic surgery to enhance their physiques.

“The majority of Nollywood filmmakers prioritise beauty over talent. There are good directors who regard only talent, but to be honest, the majority prefer beauty to talent. That is why you see a lot of movie stars doing surgeries to enhance their bodies,” Rosman stated.

She further noted that the pressure to conform to rigid beauty standards extends beyond the screen into wider Nigerian society, where individuals are often denied professional opportunities simply for not wearing makeup or for not having enhanced physical features like a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL).

According to her, this trend has created an avenue where unqualified individuals leverage physical aesthetics to secure demanding roles ahead of highly competent actors.
