Spain-Morocco Border Crisis: Death Toll Rises to 67 as Ceuta Tightens Security

The death toll from the latest migrant crisis on Spain’s border with Morocco has climbed to 67 after tens of thousands of people crossed into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa.

The chaotic mass crossing reportedly left several people dead, with some drowning while others were killed in a stampede as crowds surged across the border.

In response, Spanish authorities announced plans to install a 500-metre containment barrier along the maritime border separating Ceuta from neighbouring Morocco. The move follows the arrival of an estimated 60,000 migrants who breached the frontier earlier this week.

Spanish officials say the situation is gradually returning to normal, with the Interior Ministry reporting that about 53,000 migrants have already returned to Morocco. On Saturday morning, a small number of exhausted migrants who reached Ceuta’s Tarajal beach by swimming were intercepted by Spanish soldiers and escorted back across the border.

Speaking in Ceuta, Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska insisted that Spain would continue to enforce its immigration laws.

“We are relentless against those who break the law,” he said.

Addressing questions over how such a large-scale border breach occurred despite tight security, Marlaska defended Morocco, describing it as “a reliable partner” rather than a threat to Spain.

He said both countries would assess what happened, adding that their cooperation had helped restore order within 24 hours.

Although the immediate crisis has eased, authorities say normalcy has yet to fully return. Ceuta’s regional president, Juan Jesus Vivas, acknowledged that life in the city of about 84,000 residents had been severely disrupted but said the process of returning migrants to Morocco was progressing satisfactorily and must be completed.
