Traveltomtom Explores Wuse Market, Showcases The Warmth Of Abuja To Global Audience

Popular travel content creator Traveltomtom, who has been making waves with his travels across Nigeria, has taken his exploration of the country to one of Abuja’s most recognisable commercial centres, Wuse Market.

Unlike a conventional shopping trip, TomTom said his visit to the market was primarily about meeting Nigerians and experiencing everyday life in the nation’s capital.

“I visited the Wuse Market in Abuja not to buy anything specifically but to meet the friendly Nigerian people,” he said.

Traveltomtom, who has been documenting his experiences across Nigeria for his international audience, said several people had recommended Wuse Market as a place he should visit if he wanted to experience a different side of Abuja.

For the traveller, the appeal of a local market lies beyond what is available for sale.

“A local market tells you more about a city than any tourist attraction ever could,” he said, explaining that markets provide an opportunity to observe what people eat, wear and buy while interacting with the people who shape the character of a city.

Wuse Market offers a wide range of goods, including fresh produce, spices, clothes, traditional fabrics, shoes, jewellery, electronics, household items and furniture.

Traveltomtom said he had expected the experience to be significantly more chaotic and crowded but was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere.

“I expected a much more chaotic vibe, more West African style, but the Wuse Market is very easy-going, pretty regulated and not extremely overcrowded,” he said.

His presence, however, did not go unnoticed.

As a visibly foreign visitor moving through the market, TomTom said traders and residents frequently approached him, called him over for conversations and asked to take photographs with him.

Many were also curious about his reasons for visiting Nigeria and appeared pleased to see him exploring Abuja.

Rather than finding the attention uncomfortable, TomTom said the warm reception contributed to what became an enjoyable experience.

“In some countries in West Africa, walking through a busy local market as an obvious foreigner can sometimes feel a little overwhelming. But once again in Nigeria, I had zero issues,” he said.

According to him, the friendliness of the people he encountered was one of the highlights of the visit, with traders willingly stopping to interact with him and allowing him to photograph their everyday activities.

“People were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and so many traders were genuinely happy for me to stop, talk and take their photos,” he added.

TomTom’s growing interest in Nigeria has also placed him among a new wave of international travel creators using digital platforms to document the country beyond conventional tourist attractions.

Through his videos and personal encounters, he has been showcasing Nigerians, their hospitality, culture and everyday experiences to audiences outside the country.

For TomTom, this human connection is central to his travels.

“That’s exactly the side of Nigeria I love showing to the world simply because the Nigerian people deserve this,” he said.

His Wuse Market visit is expected to feature in more of his upcoming travel content, with the creator revealing that he filmed considerably more footage during his time at the market.

As Traveltomtom continues to explore Nigeria, his Abuja experience offers another perspective on the capital, not simply through its landmarks and attractions, but through the traders, residents and ordinary interactions that make the city what it is.

And for Abuja residents already following his journey, Traveltomtom has one more question: where should he explore next?
