The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has recorded partial compliance from some government ministries, departments, and agencies in the two-day nationwide strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
When LEADERSHIP visited the Federal Secretariat on Tuesday morning alongside other major areas such as the popular Treasury House, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), and some banks in the territory, it was discovered that only a few of these places visited, partially complied with the strike, while others did not comply at all.
In the Federal Secretariat, there was almost full compliance, as most offices were under locks and keys, and banks like Zenith and Union banks in the secretariat premises were locked.
However, in places like the FCTA, FCDA, Treasury House, Zenith Banks outside the secretariat, and other major government agencies like the FCT area council service commission completely refused to comply as activities were going on as usual.
Speaking on the strike at the Federal Secretariat, the global president of Yoruba Council Worldwide, Aare Oladotun Hassan, described the warning strike as unnecessary, saying that the strike cannot correct the anomalies on the ground.
“There are other issues to look into, like that of insecurity. You cannot hold just one issue of removal of fuel subsidy and say that the entire country should be shut down.
“I am putting it to the DSS, anyone, especially the NLC, who is calling for this kind of strike, should be investigated, the BVN should be subjected to forensic investigation. Because somebody somewhere is fueling this.
“Presently as a country, we are managing and crawling. Nobody should drag us into military and think that when they cause mayhem they will come and reap the benefit,” he said.
Hassan who is also the secretary of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Epe Branch, said that Nigeria belongs to everyone and, that the NLC should not overheat the polity.
“They should not mix every issue and just want to cause a crisis, by just calling for an overnight warning strike. It is uncalled for and should be investigated. We call for the prosecution and investigation of the NLC. Most of the leadership of the NLC are card-carrying members of the Labour Party.
“They proclaim to also remove the fuel subsidy. You do not approbate and reprobate. We expect the NLC to come out with questions on how the collective responsibilities should be formed to put an end to the challenges in the country, not to declare a warning strike,” he said.
