The European Investment Bank (EIB), which supports the Nigeria Erosion Adaptation and Watershed Project (NEWMAP EIB), has pledged to support Gombe State which is facing serious environmental threats posed by gully erosion in controlling the disaster.

LEADERSHIP Weekend reports that erosion has continued to ravage communities in parts of the state, destroying hundreds of houses, farms and other properties every rainy season, rendering residents homeless.

But the state government led by Governor Inuwa Yahaya has secured international intervention from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to tackle the menace under the NEWMAP EIB project.

Recently, a delegation from the National Project Management Unit, led by its coordinator, Anda Ayuba Yalaks visited the prone areas in five local governments of the state to assess the damage, impacts of the disaster and pledged quick and adequate intervention.

“We are committed to supporting Gombe State in its fight against gully erosion. Our assessment will guide the development of effective interventions that address the root causes of erosion,” he said.

During the visit, the team inspected major drainage areas that traverse Wuro Shi’e, Bomala, Yarima Quarters, Galdimari, GGSS Doma and Unguwa Uku.
