The member representing Jere federal constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon Ahmed Satomi, and the member representing Jere state constituency at the Borno State House of Assembly, Hon. Abba Kyari, respectively, led 150 youth volunteers to fumigate and disinfect the communities in Jere against waterborne diseases.

Recall that the flood that ravaged the Maiduguri and Jere areas destroyed 70 per cent of critical public and government infrastructure, such as homes, schools, hospitals, markets, roads, and bridges.

Hon Satomi, accompanied by a member of the House of Assembly, began the fumigation yesterday along Gongulong-Madinatu and the State Lowcost Housing Estate. The exercise is expected to last five days and include other areas like Mashamari, Old Maiduguri, Galtimari, and Maimusari wards.

During the fumigation exercise, Satomi said, ” In line with our mandate, I have teamed up with Hon. Abba Kyari, member representing Jere at the Borno State House of Assembly, stakeholders, and 150 youth volunteers to complement the efforts of the state government under the leadership of Governor Babagana Zulum in disinfecting contaminated communities as water recedes.

“We have liaised with Borno State Environmental Protection Agency (BOSEPA) and discovered some gaps. For example, heavy trucks and vehicles cannot access some areas or streets, so it has become incumbent on us to walk into those areas to fumigate and disinfect these communities with chlorine, Dettol, and other chemicals.

“It is volunteer work to augment the state government’s efforts. The Marshalls are well-trained and kitted to disinfect the entire community. We will also give them some stipends at the end of the exercise.

“We would cover three wards: Mashamari, Old Maiduguri, Maimashari, and Galtamari, and it would be extended to other parts of Jere.”
