Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, President of the Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF), has congratulated Maryann Philip-Shaibu on her remarkable achievement in the history of Nigerian golf, while advocating for greater participation of women in the sport.

Mrs Philip-Shaibu was crowned Queen of the Green for the 2024/2025 season after winning the Benin Club Golf ladies’ tournament for the second consecutive year. This impressive feat makes her the first person in the history of the Benin Club Golf to achieve back-to-back victories as the ladies’ overall match play champion.

In a statement personally signed by Runsewe on Tuesday in Abuja, he expressed that the commendation was not only a celebration of Maryann’s achievement but also a call to action for increased women’s participation in golf. The NGF president emphasised the importance of promoting inclusivity and diversity within the sport.

“The NGF has been actively working to enhance women’s participation in golf, recognising the significant benefits it brings to both physical and mental well-being,” he stated.

“As a federation, one of our primary goals is to promote women’s golf by introducing the sport to young girls and women at the grassroots level, as well as providing essential training and coaching.”

Runsewe highlighted that globally, women’s golf has experienced substantial growth, with an increasing number of women taking up the sport.

“According to the National Golf Federation, the number of women and girls playing golf in the United States has risen by 23 per cent since 2018. This trend is reflected in other countries, where initiatives such as Topgolf and golf simulators are attracting new players.

Nigeria cannot be an exception,” he added.

He noted that Mrs Philip-Shaibu’s victory would significantly encourage more women to take up golf, thereby promoting greater inclusivity within the sport. Furthermore, he expressed hope that her achievement would inspire young golfers, particularly women, to pursue their passion for golf.

The NGF President also commended Philip Shaibu for his support of his wife’s golfing career, underscoring the importance of men encouraging their spouses’ participation in golf.

“Golf offers numerous benefits for women, including improved physical health. It can enhance cardiovascular health, strength, and flexibility. Additionally, golf can reduce stress, uplift mood, and boost self-esteem while providing opportunities for socialising, networking, and building relationships.”

“Once again, let me sincerely commend you for this outstanding achievement and hope that it is just the first of many more to come. Fairway greetings!”
