The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has said it is preparing a grand reception to receive some political associates of the former governorship candidate of the party and the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) Kano Central senatorial candidate, Dr Nasiru Gawuna, and other prominent politicians who had joined the party in the state.
The APC state spokesman, Aawulu Soja, disclosed this on Thursday via a telephone interview with our correspondent while reacting to the planned defection of members of Gawuna’s political camp from the NDC to the APC.
Soja said preparations for the reception had been concluded, although the party was yet to announce a specific date for the ceremony.
His comments followed a solidarity visit by some associates of Gawuna to Governor Abba Yusuf and his deputy, Murtala Sule Garo, ahead of their planned defection.
The delegation, led by a close ally of Gawuna, Muhammad Badaru Umar, included the NDC Vice Chairman in Kano State, Ali Datti Yako, Mansur Isa Gawuna, Uba Tanko Mijinyawa and other political associates.
Soja said the group was part of a wider political realignment involving prominent figures and supporters who had previously operated under Gawuna’s political camp.
He also listed former Kano State governor and former senator representing Kano South, Kabiru Gaya, and the serving senator representing Kano Central, Rufai Sani Hanga, among those the APC was expecting to receive.
He said former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, who recently returned to the APC and secured the party’s ticket, would also participate in a formal reception alongside the other defectors.
According to him, “They have all declared their allegiance to the APC under the leadership of Governor Yusuf.”
The APC spokesman described the development as a welcome boost to the party ahead of the 2027 elections, saying the party needed the support of the politicians while the defectors needed a platform with prospects.
Soja further appealed to former Governor and Kwankwasiyya movement leader, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to return to the APC, warning that remaining outside the ruling party could affect his political future.
He also urged NDC members and other politicians seeking political relevance ahead of 2027 to join the APC, describing the party as the strongest platform for political survival.
