Landslide Kills 2 In Calabar Apartment

Barely a month after a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall killed four children of a family at Ikot Awatim community in Calabar Municipality local government area of Cross River State, another landslide struck in the same Calabar Municipality yesterday, killing two persons at Ikot Efangha community.

The tragedy has deepened fears in Ikot Effanga, where residents have lived for years with a ravine threatening homes. An elderly resident who preferred anonymity lamented that appeals to both the state and federal governments had yielded nothing.

“Must they wait for people to die before they respond?” he asked.
Residents of the community are now in fear and grief after the landslide killed two people in the early hours yesterday.

The victims, a man and a woman believed to be friends, were reportedly spending the night in an apartment when soil from the nearby hill slid and covered their apartment. The victims were trapped under the debris and died before help could reach them.

An eyewitness, Stella (surname withheld) told LEADERSHIP that youths dug the debris and recovered the bodies on Friday morning.

The bodies were taken to a mortuary, Stella said. The identities of the deceased were yet to be ascertained at the time of filing this report.

Attempts by our Correspondent to get the member representing Calabar Municipal in the House of Assembly, Mr. Stanley Nsemo, and the Commissioner for Works, Pius Ankpo, who are also residents of Çàlabar municipal council yielded no result.
