Meta Appoints Shah To Lead WhatsApp In Major Leadership Shift

Meta Platforms has appointed Indian entrepreneur and Meta Platforms executive and CRED founder Kunal Shah as the new global head of WhatsApp, in a leadership transition that also includes a major strategic investment in his fintech venture.

The move comes as outgoing WhatsApp chief Will Cathcart steps aside after seven years at the helm, with Meta indicating he will transition into another leadership role within the company.

As part of the broader deal, Meta is reportedly investing about $900 million in Shah’s fintech company CRED, valuing the Bengaluru-based startup at approximately $4.5 billion and securing a minority stake.

Founded in 2018, CRED operates a members-only financial platform that rewards users with strong credit profiles while offering services across payments, lending, insurance and wealth management. The company currently serves about 17 million monthly active users and processes a significant share of India’s credit card payments.

Meta said Shah’s appointment reflects his track record in building scaled digital consumer platforms and deep experience in India’s fast-growing technology ecosystem. The development also signals the company’s increasing strategic focus on India, one of its largest global markets.

Shah previously co-founded digital payments platform FreeCharge, which was later acquired by Snapdeal in a landmark transaction before he went on to launch CRED. He has since become one of India’s most prominent startup founders and investors.

Industry observers say the leadership change comes at a critical moment for WhatsApp, as Meta intensifies efforts to expand monetisation, scale business messaging services, and integrate artificial intelligence features across its ecosystem.

Under the arrangement, Shah is expected to step down from his role as chief executive officer of CRED. The company said its head of strategy and finance, Miten Sampat, will serve as interim CEO while the board begins the search for a permanent replacement.

The development underscores Meta’s growing bet on India’s digital economy and its push to leverage local entrepreneurial talent in shaping global product strategy.
