The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Gboko Branch, has called on lawyers to take a leading role in advancing practical solutions to Nigeria’s persistent challenges while upholding the rule of law and defending justice.

The chairman of the NBA Gboko Branch, Felix Zahemen Uwar, made the call in his welcome address at the branch’s 2026 Law Week on Saturday, stressing that lawyers must continue to serve as defenders of justice and protectors of the rights of every citizen.

“In a time when our nation faces many challenges, our voices, actions and commitment to justice are needed more than ever. Let us therefore use this opportunity to renew our dedication to these noble ideals,” Uwar said.

Delivering the keynote address on the theme: “Insecurity: Legal and Socio-Economic Perspectives,” executive director, Legal Services, representing the North Central Zone on the Executive Management Team of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), Dr. Steven Andzenge, urged Nigerians to reject violence, embrace dialogue and promote tolerance.

He called on the government to strengthen institutions, improve governance, invest in human capital and ensure that security policies are firmly anchored in constitutional principles.

Andzenge, a former Executive Commissioner of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), also urged members of the Bench and Bar to continue defending the Constitution with courage, uphold justice without fear or favour, advocate meaningful legal reforms and ensure that the rule of law remains the cornerstone of Nigeria’s democracy.

“To every Nigerian, let us recognise that the security of our nation is a shared responsibility. Lasting peace cannot be achieved by government alone; it requires the active participation of every citizen,” he said.
