Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited (PINL) has raised fresh concerns over attempted crude oil theft and sabotage in parts of the Niger Delta, warning contractors and surveillance operatives to uphold discipline or face prosecution.

The warning came during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Bayelsa State, where the company stressed the need for stronger collaboration between host communities, security agencies, and operators to protect critical oil infrastructure.

Speaking at the meeting, the general manager, Community and Stakeholders Relations, Dr Akpos Mezeh, said recent progress in reducing pipeline vandalism was largely due to improved cooperation and intelligence sharing among stakeholders.

He, however, disclosed that the company recently intercepted two tankers attempting to illegally load crude oil at the Atali axis, describing the incident as a serious breach that pointed to possible internal compromise.

Mezeh warned that any contractor or operative found guilty of negligence or collusion would face strict sanctions, including termination of contracts and legal action, stressing that such acts threaten national revenue and community livelihoods.

He reiterated that protecting oil infrastructure is not just a corporate responsibility but a national duty, noting that stable operations in the oil and gas sector are key to Nigeria’s economic growth and development.

“Community Partnership is national security. When communities protect infrastructure, they protect livelihoods, national revenue, and the future of our country.

“Recently, at Atali axis – zone 4, two tankers were intercepted while attempting to load Crude. It was only through the effectiveness of our backup intelligence system that this operation was foiled; otherwise, those trucks would have successfully loaded.

“Let this serve as a clear and firm warning to all contractors and operatives that, any act of negligence, compromise, or collusion will not be tolerated. Going forward, any contractor found wanting will not only lose their contract but will also face full prosecution under the law,” he stated.

The PINL official also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of host communities through scholarship schemes, women empowerment programmes, medical outreach, and youth engagement in pipeline protection activities.

According to him, the company is planning a major youth skills acquisition programme in 2026 across Bayelsa, Rivers, Imo, and Abia States to provide alternative livelihoods and reduce involvement in illegal activities.

He added that environmental protection remains a top priority, with measures in place to ensure safe operations, quick response to incidents, and continuous engagement with communities on sustainability practices.

Stakeholders at the meeting, including traditional rulers and community leaders, commended the firm for its interventions but called for more empowerment programmes, improved communication, and inclusive participation to sustain peace and development in the region.
