A youth advocacy group in Taraba State has expressed concern over the recent withdrawal of traditional titles from Alhaji Dr. Saleem Iliyasu Goje, popularly known as Dan Mama, describing the development as discouraging to young people aspiring to contribute to community development.
The group, Taraba State Youths Advocate for Good Governance, in a statement issued after a meeting at the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Hall, Jalingo, said the decision taken against Dan Mama by the state government raised questions about fairness, due process, and the encouragement of youth participation in leadership.
According to the Chairman of the group, Comrade Ibrahim Isa Donga, Dan Mama had earned recognition and traditional titles through his contributions to society and should have been given the opportunity to defend himself before such measures were taken.
“The government’s unilateral decision to revoke these honors, without transparently stating clear and justifiable reasons, sends a discouraging signal to the vibrant youths of Taraba State,” the statement noted.
The group urged the government to publicly clarify the allegations and procedures that led to the action, allow Mr. Goje a fair hearing, and, where no wrongdoing is established, reconsider the withdrawal of his titles.
It also called for a renewed commitment by the state to policies that promote youth inclusion in governance and community service.
While reaffirming its belief in peaceful advocacy, the association said it would continue to monitor developments, stressing the importance of justice, fairness, and encouragement of young leaders across Taraba State.
