Mexican security forces have arrested a nephew of the jailed drug lord, Joaquin El Chapo Guzman, during a major security operation in northern Mexico.
The suspect, identified by officials as Isai N due to Mexican privacy laws, was caught in Sonora state, an area very close to the United States border.
One of Mexico’s top security officials, Omar Garcia Harfuch, announced the arrest in a statement shared on the social media platform X. Harfuch noted that the suspect is also a wanted fugitive in the United States.
Security officials have not yet given details about the exact crimes Isai N is accused of, or when he will be sent to the United States to face trial.
The big arrest is part of ongoing operations by Mexican authorities to break down the drug gangs tied to Guzman, the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel.
El Chapo is currently serving a life sentence in a maximum-security prison in the United States for drug trafficking and other major crimes.
