Enyimba FC has issued a robust rebuttal to claims by former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye regarding alleged poor player welfare within the club.
Ideye’s assertions have ignited controversy just a year after his much-anticipated signing, which was celebrated as a significant boost for Nigerian football.
The two-time African champions, under the leadership of former international Kanu Nwankwo, were seen as embarking on a new era of ambition and professionalism with Ideye’s arrival. However, his tenure at Enyimba has ended amidst accusations that have thrust the club into the media spotlight.
Exclusivenews.com.ng reports that Ideye, whose career includes stints in the English Premier League and other top European leagues, joined Enyimba on a reported monthly salary of ₦1 million, one of the highest within the squad.
His contract also included perks such as ₦65,000-per-night hotel accommodation and air travel for away games, extended in recognition of his international experience.
Despite the significant investment, Ideye’s on-field performance has been deemed disappointing, netting only five goals across all competitions—a tally that has left fans frustrated and expectations unmet.
A source within the club commented, “His performance simply did not justify the wages. We brought him in to inspire and lead, but that leadership never materialised.”
Furthermore, it has been reported that Ideye’s influence may have led to friction among team members. Sources indicate that his presence disrupted team cohesion, a situation that allegedly contributed to Rivers United’s decision to decline the opportunity to sign him prior to his move to Enyimba.
Enyimba FC has categorically described Ideye’s claims as “misleading” and “self-serving,” firmly standing by the club’s commitment to player welfare. As the situation unfolds, the club continues to focus on its objectives for the upcoming season.
