Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) will begin the implementation of the new bodyweight categories at the 9th National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, Delta State.
The youth games, which will take place from 29th August to 6th September, will feature over 30 sporting events, including weightlifting.
On Monday, the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation informed all coaches, stakeholders, and officials that it would enforce the new bodyweight categories as approved by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF).
In a press release signed by the media officer, Amaechi Agbo, the Federation directed all coaches and State Associations to ensure that their athletes registered for the NYG comply with the new bodyweight categories.
A total of six bodyweight categories, comprising three each for men and women, will be featured in the weightlifting event at the NYG Asaba 2025.
The new bodyweight categories for men are: 56kg, 60kg, and 65kg.
For women, the new bodyweight categories are: 44kg, 48kg, and 53kg.
It is important to note that the International Weightlifting Federation began implementing the new bodyweight categories for senior, junior, and youth athletes on 1st June 2025, as ratified by the Executive Board.
These changes include eight classifications for both men and women in senior and junior divisions. For youth, there are eight categories for both boys and girls.
Thirty-six states of the Federation, as well as the Federal Capital Territory, are expected to participate in the weightlifting event at the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.
