The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS), has called on media organisations to partner with the institute in creating a transparent and accountable environment in the built and construction sector.

The president of NIQS, QS Kene Nzekwe, made the call in Abuja when he received a delegation from the LEADERSHIP Newspapers on a courtesy visit to the institute’s headquarters.

In his welcome remarks, QS Nzekwe emphasised the central role of quantity surveyors in promoting transparency, accountability, and value-for-money in Nigeria’s infrastructure and construction projects. He challenged the media to interrogate mega projects across the country by asking critical questions on cost management and the involvement of professional quantity surveyors.

“When you see public projects—roads, bridges, edifices—it is important to ask: who are the quantity surveyors involved? Public funds belong to Nigerians, and accountability is only possible when cost professionals are engaged,” he stated.

The NIQS president highlighted the Institute’s long-standing contributions to nation-building, noting its mandate in fiscal management of construction projects and its commitment to safeguarding public interest. He also invited LEADERSHIP Newspaper to support the Institute’s forthcoming Biennial General Meeting (BGM) scheduled for 18th–22nd November 2025, which will mark the end of his tenure and usher in a new leadership.

Responding, the LEADERSHIP Newspaper delegation, led by the director of Special Projects, Agbo Paul commended NIQS for its pivotal role in the fight against corruption and in strengthening transparency in Nigeria’s construction sector.

Agbo reaffirmed the Newspaper’s commitment to amplifying NIQS activities and achievements, particularly as the Institute celebrates its 55th anniversary this year. He proposed enhanced media collaboration to showcase NIQS milestones, tackle the menace of quackery, and promote professional standards in the built environment.

The visit concluded with a mutual agreement to deepen partnerships between NIQS and LEADERSHIP Newspaper in advancing accountability, transparency, and sustainable development in Nigeria’s construction industry.
