The victims of 17 communities affected by floods during the 2024 wet season will benefit from relief materials.

The Director General of the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA), Mr Zachary Allumaga, disclosed this.

The director general said the victims were located in five local government areas of the state designated as flood red zones.

He said the local government areas include Awe, Nasarawa, Toto, Lafia and Doma.

He explained that some of the affected local government areas were prone to flooding because they were near the River Benue.

He said the rampaging flood destroyed farms, farmland, economic trees and houses, thereby rendering many riverine dwellers homeless.

He said the relief materials that will be distributed include building materials for those whose houses were destroyed in the disaster.

Mr Allumaga said it is part of the N3 billion the federal government donated earlier to assist flood victims.

“The NASEMA is responsible for the distribution of non-food items like building materials, such as bags, cement, zinc, and nails. We are transporting these materials to the affected local governments and communities for onward distribution.

“Nasarawa State is prone to disasters because of its proximity to River Benue; we share boundaries with River Benue in five LGAs: Awe, Nasarawa, Toto, Lafia and Doma,” he stated.
