The organisers of the ongoing Gbolahan Odele Age Group Tennis Tournament have expressed their delight at the turnout of young players for the annual event.
Approximately 120 participants took part in the 2024 tournament, organised by Badejo Sports, with this year’s attendance nearly 100 per cent higher at the Adejumo Tennis Centre in Ejigbo, Lagos.
Tournament Director, Coach Dele Badejo, remarked on Tuesday that he was surprised by the increase in registrations leading up to the competition.
“I am particularly astonished that not only did the youths register, but they also attended in large numbers alongside their parents for the tournament.
“They all showed up, eager to get started. The rain slowed us down a bit, but overall, we are very pleased to have more people attending this time.
“I believe the kids are eager to compete for Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) points, which will be beneficial for them in the future.”
In some of the matches held on Tuesday in the girls’ U-12 Group A, Rasaki Mabubat defeated Gloria Akpan 4-0, 4-1, while Onyemenam Pinky overcame Oluwaferanmi Adeojo 4-0, 4-1. In another encounter in the group, Rasaki Mabubat won her second match against Onyemenam Pinky 4-0, 4-0.
In Group B, Oluwaseyi Oluwadabira triumphed over Isa Moto Mariam 4-1, 4-0, while Mohammed Amirat claimed victory against Isamotu Mariam 5-3, 4-1 in a highly thrilling encounter.
